Who We Are
Our Emphasis
Camp Pagweak is a Christian camp where the word of God and the love of Jesus is taught and practiced every day. We have a lively time of singing and guest speakers who lead kid friendly small group discussions in the morning. A couple of times a week we have great campfires in the evening with a story or an opportunity to ask questions.
Over 80% of our campers each summer do not have any church affiliation. That’s fine with us, we encourage kids from all backgrounds to come to camp. While all our campers may not share all of our perspectives on faith, they will be surrounded by values that everyone can appreciate: honesty, trust, love, care, etc. Kids are encouraged to ask questions about anything they have learned so they can decide for themselves what they think.
We make our best efforts to be respectful of the greater community, we ask campers also to respect that we are a Christian camp. If there are any questions, let us know - we would love to help!
Our History
The essence of Camp Pagweak started out with a few tents and no property of their own in 1938. By 1945 the current site was purchased starting with 7 acres. Volunteers raised the first lodge and churches provided funds for the first cabins - Camp Pagweak had officially begun. Nine more acres were purchased in 1994 and an additional four in 2003.
The original lodge was erected in 1966 and still stands today. By 1979, we had washrooms! Now we have 12 cabins, most of which have been replaced over time with newer models. These cabins can host over 100 campers if needed! A new wash house built in 2009 with more toilets and showers as well a cabin for the visiting Pastor and a divided cabin for the cook and assistant director continue to add value and capacity to the property.
The old lodge is now the worship center with a beautiful new lodge built in 2013. A bright kitchen, dining area and offices are housed here with meeting rooms and a first aid room. So many wonderful changes over the years that serve to help us minister to more kids. That same year, through very generous giving, a donated house was moved to the property for the Camp Director and family to live. We have so much to be thankful for to a great and generous God and His people!
Our Director
David Throop is passionate about Christian camping and has been ever since he first started volunteering at Green Hill Lake Camp back in 1988.
Since then he has served as a volunteer at Green Hill, served 3 years as our summer director at Camp Pagweak, been involved in various camp boards here and in Ontario, as well as leading staff training for a majority of the camps here in Atlantic Canada over the past 7 years. He has a background in accounting but spent most of his working years as a high school teacher in Ontario where his greatest fun was teaching leadership in the school setting.
He retired from teaching in 2011 to become a children and youth pastor, which allowed him to teach about his Saviour, and at the same time bring leadership teaching to his church and also Atlantic Canadian camps.
He retired from that role in 2017 and began volunteering in his church and local schools waiting on what God had next for him. He is thrilled that God has called him back to Pagweak to fulfill a dream and be a Christian camp director.
